Oral Cancer Screening: Benefits, Who Needs It and What to Expect
Published
An oral cancer screening is a quick, painless exam that looks for early signs of cancer or precancerous changes in your mouth and throat. It’s usually done during your routine checkup, takes just a few minutes and can make a real difference, because oral cancer is most treatable when it’s found early.
Who Needs Oral Cancer Screening?
Everyone benefits from regular screening, since cancer can develop in anyone’s mouth. It’s especially important if you:
- Use tobacco: cigarettes, cigars, pipes, snuff or chewing tobacco
- Drink alcohol heavily
- Have had significant sun exposure, which raises the risk of lip cancer
- Have had oral cancer before
- Have significant exposure to human papillomavirus (HPV)
We can help you understand your own risk factors and how often you should be checked.
Early Signs to Watch For
- Sores, lumps or patches that don’t heal
- Difficulty moving your tongue, chewing or swallowing
- Numbness in the mouth
- Swelling or pain
- Irritated or dry patches in the throat
Many symptoms don’t appear until the disease has progressed, which is why routine screening matters even when you feel fine.
What to Expect During a Screening
A basic screening takes about five minutes and is completely non-invasive. Your dentist examines:
- Your lips and gums, inside and out
- Your inner cheeks
- Your tongue, on all sides and underneath
- The roof of your mouth and the back of your throat
If you wear dentures, you’ll be asked to remove them so the tissue underneath can be checked. In some cases, additional tools such as a special screening light or rinse can help highlight abnormal tissue. If anything looks unusual, we may recommend a follow-up visit or a biopsy.
8 Benefits of Regular Screening
- Early detection. Finding cancerous changes early means treatment can start before they spread.
- Better outcomes. Oral cancers found at an early stage are much more likely to be treated successfully.
- Quick and comfortable. It’s a few minutes, with no discomfort.
- Catches precancerous changes. Spotting changes that could become cancer allows earlier, simpler treatment.
- Part of your regular visit. No extra appointment needed.
- Greater awareness. You’ll learn what signs to watch for between visits.
- Peace of mind. Knowing you’re being checked regularly reduces worry.
- A plan that fits your risk. Higher-risk patients can get prevention tips and more frequent screenings.
How Often Should You Be Screened?
Most dental professionals recommend a screening at least once a year, often at your routine checkup. Depending on your risk, we may suggest more frequent exams.
